Abstract: THIS STUDY DEMONSTRATED THAT CERAMIC MEMBRANES COULD BE USED IN ANAEROBIC MEMBRANE BIOREACTORS TO TREAT DOMESTIC WASTEWATER. TO MINIMIZE MEMBRANE FOULING, SMALL PORE-SIZED MEMBRANES SHOULD BE USED TO PREVENT PORE BLOCKAGES THAT WERE INDUCED BY THE BIOPOLYMERS, ESPECIALLY PROTEINS. BIOFILM CARRIERS COULD FURTHER DELAY MEMBRANE FOULING. HIGHER FILLING RATIOS OF BIOFILM CARRIERS INCREASED THE CHANCES OF COLLISIONS WITH MEMBRANE SURFACES AND RESULTED IN CAKE LAYERS WITH LOWER FOULING RESISTANCES. MEMBRANE FOULING COULD BE FURTHER MITIGATED BY BACKWASHING WITH NACLO SOLUTIONS THAT REMOVED THE PROTEINS IN THE CAKE LAYERS AND MEMBRANE PORES. HOWEVER, EXCESSIVELY HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF NACLO EXACERBATED MEMBRANE FOULING DUE TO DETERIORATED BIOFLOCS AND HIGH CONVECTIONS OF DISSOLVED ORGANIC MATTERS ONTO MEMBRANE SURFACES. IN CONCLUSION, A HIGHER BACKWASHING NACLO CONCENTRATION SHOULD BE USED TO ATTAIN BETTER DIRECT MEMBRANE CLEANING EFFICIENCIES AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT DETERIORATE THE MICROBIAL
