Abstract: THE COMMON INDUSTRY PRACTICE OF USING LINEAR POTENTIAL FLOW MODELS TO STUDY SIDE-BY-SIDE HYDRODYNAMIC INTERACTIONS BETWEEN TWO VESSELS OVER-PREDICTS THE FREE SURFACE ELEVATIONS, DUE TO THE INVISCID ASSUMPTION OF POTENTIAL FLOW. THIS RESEARCH PROPOSES AN APPROACH TO SPLIT THE VISCOUS ENERGY LOST INTO COMPONENTS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PHYSICAL FLOW PROCESSES. MODIFICATIONS TO LINEAR POTENTIAL FLOW ARE DEVELOPED, SUCH THAT THE ENERGY LOSS COMPONENTS CAN BE CONVERTED INTO POTENTIAL FLOW DISSIPATIVE COEFFICIENTS. BY USING BOTH THE COMPONENT ENERGY DISSIPATION APPROACH AND THE DISSIPATIVE COEFFICIENTS IN A MODIFIED POTENTIAL FLOW MODEL, BETTER PREDICTIONS OF HYDRODYNAMIC INTERACTIONS CAN BE OBTAINED. RESULTS FROM VISCOUS SIMULATIONS OF SIDE-BY-SIDE BARGES UNDER EXCITATION FROM REGULAR WAVES ARE PRESENTED, AND COMPARED WITH CORRESPONDING RESULTS FROM THE MODIFIED POTENTIAL FLOW MODEL.
