Abstract: This study aims at developing models and solutions to improve taxi dispatch services using real-time traffic and customer information.The existing taxi dispatch system in Singapore to handle current-bookings is based on the shortest, straight-line distance. An alternative dispatch system is proposed, based on the shortest-time path with real-time traffic conditions. For advance-booking demands, currently are handled on a case-by-case basis; booking demands and taxi assignments are treated independently. A novel trip-chaining strategy based on a customized algorithm of Pickup and Delivery Problem with Time Window (PDPTW) is proposed.The effectiveness of both existing and proposed dispatch systems is investigated through microscopic traffic simulations. Data from the simulations show that the proposed dispatch systems reduce more than 50% in passenger pick up time and average travel distance under current-bookings, and reduce the taxi fleet size by up to 87.5%, at the same demands level of advance-bookings.
