Abstract: TCP, perhaps the most widely used transport protocol, was designed for highly reliable links and stationery hosts. Due to the characteristics of wireless links and potential vertical handoff among multiple wireless interfaces, performance of TCP, hence applications, is affected. To improve the TCP performance in this wireless scenario, we propose Reactive TCP, which adopts different mechanisms for loss & congestion control based on current network path characteristics. These network characteristics form the input of Reactive TCP. However, commonly used probing-packets methods can not be used to estimate the characteristics of wireless links due to its dynamic nature. Hence, non-intrusive mechanisms for wireless link estimation are necessary.In this thesis, we investigate into the design of Reactive TCP and propose a new non-intrusive link estimation mechanism for IEEE 802.11 DCF based WLAN, one of the most popular wireless links.
