dc.description.abstract | In urban engineered stormwater networks, sediment associated microbial communities drive ecosystem services such as nutrient retention and metal transformations. This thesis was driven by the hypothesis that sediment particle size fractions provide different ecological niches for microbial communities. Particle size fractions explained nearly a quarter of the variation in microbiome composition and functional potential respectively. Gene-centric analysis showed sediment size-fraction-based partitioning of key nitrogen and sulfur transformations, and specific metals and ions associated with different taxa and functions. Genome centric analysis recovered many novel genomes and uncovered novel biogeochemical functional capacities of candidate phyla radiation bacteria. Finally, a novel metabolomics workflow showed high degree of community sharing and partitioning of the microbial meta-metabolome across particle size fractions. This is the first comprehensive study establishing the role of sediment size fractions in the microbial services of urban freshwater ecosystem. | |
