Abstract: Internet is popular today. Due to the wide variety in environment and requirements, people want good quality content delivery service with content personalization and customization. Active web intermediary server is aimed to provide such service. Real-time content transformation in web intermediaries is the key to achieve that. However, issues like performance model of Internet content delivery, impact of real-time content transformation on network transmission and system considerations for active intermediaries are still open for research. In this thesis, a "Chunk-Level Latency Dependence Model" (C-LDP) is firstly defined for better modeling of today's Internet content delivery process. Based on this model, Object Declaration and Page Structure Table mechanisms are suggested to improve the content delivery. Transformation is also modeled and mapped to three modes in this thesis. With a "Chunk-Level Latency Dependence Graph" (C-LDG), each mode's impact on the network transmission is well explained. This thesis also presents a 4-stage AXForm system framework to depict the system architecture for such active web intermediary servers. System requirements are discussed in details. Finally, an automatic watermarking proxy is used as an example to give a better illustration on how active web intermediaries can be built.
