Abstract: To understand the role of various structural features on the self-assembly of polymers, series of methacrylic or acrylic polymers comprised of laterally attached aromatic mesogenic units incorporated with alkyl chains were synthesized. The position and length of alkyl chains, functional groups on the rigid core played a significant role in the packing of the polymers. Nematic, smectic and columnar mesophases were induced through tailoring the side chains of polymers. Complexes from polymers with side-chain pyrimidine groups showed liquid crystalline properties and took a different morphology from the pristine polymers. A series of chromophore-crowded polymers were synthesized and used as radiation sensitive materials for e-beam lithography.
