Abstract
Based on the careful analysis of the linguistic data from the ancient texts of Zhanguo Ce, this study is built upon the research perspective of pragmatics. The thesis provides an in-depth study of politeness and face in the conversations in Zhanguo Ce. The main body of the thesis discusses politeness and face issues in Zhanguo Ce in the aspects as follows, the relationship and interactions among politeness, face and “benefit orientation”; the violation of the cooperative principle and the conversational implicature, as well as rhetorical effects; the general reflections on politeness (li) and modesty (qian); social deixis. We believe that such a study will enrich the pragmatic research on Chinese politeness and face, as well as the exploration of the speech communication and the language use in the special historical social cultural contexts in Zhanguo Ce.
