Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to examine two aspects of entrepreneursa?? utilization of their social networks to acquire resources for high-tech ventures at the emerging stage: (1) what are the contingencies for networks to be more effective? And (2) what factors can influence entrepreneursa?? propensity to use networks? I investigate these research questions using primary field survey data collected from 128 firms in Singapore and 250 firms in Beijing. For the first question, the results suggest that social networks become more useful with increasing information asymmetry between entrepreneurs and resource owners. For the second question, the results support my human capital model for explaining the propensity of entrepreneurs to use social networks. In particular, the data suggest that the reach and richness of social networks are positively correlated with network utilization and the level of social skills is negatively correlated with network utilization. Moreover, both of these correlations increase with entrepreneursa?? perception of market competitive intensity.
