Abstract: The first part of the project deals with timing acquisition for perpendicular magnetic recording channels. Using partial response equalization, the channel response is shaped into a predetermined target. Preambles are then applied to the equalized channel to facilitate timing acquisition. Two fast acquisition techniques are developed that can completely eliminate hang-ups during acquisition with high reliability, even when the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is low. The second part deals with iterative timing recovery at low SNR. Two different types of joint timing ISI trellises are investigated. A soft output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) is developed for the first trellis. Simulations show that cycle-slips during tracking may be corrected upon iterative exchange of information between the SOVA detector and Turbo decoders. We also present a forward-only maximum a posteriori probability algorithm for the other joint timing ISI trellis.
