Abstract: The objectives of this research are (1) to evaluate the potential benefits of different real-time traffic information for trucks during incident at expressways; and (2) to identify significant factors that affect average truck travel time. The evaluation was carried out with a microscopic traffic simulation tool, named PARAMICS. PARAMICS application programming interface plug-ins have been developed to simulate the truck diversion behavior under different traffic information, namely Variable Message Signs, VMS and Travel Time Displays; and dynamic route guidance systems. Randomized complete block design and factorial design were adopted in the design of experiment. The findings indicated that when the level of completeness of real-time traffic information was increased, the average truck travel time decreased accordingly. All the five factors, namely traffic information available to truck drivers, network origin-destination travel demand, incident locations, incident severity and percentage of familiar background traffic, affected the average truck travel time significantly.
