Abstract: The objective of this study is to repair the damaged structures using piezoelectric actuators. For a cracked beam, numerical results indicate that the voltage required depends on the location of the external force, size of PZT actuator, the crack location and stiffness of boundary supporting springs. For a beam with an embedded horizontal crack/delamination, a pure shear force induced by the piezoelectric actuator is utilized to repair a delaminated beam when it is subjected to an ideal axial compression force. For the general case where the delaminated beam is subjected to an eccentric compression force, the pure bending moment induced by piezoelectric actuator is utilized to repair the delaminated beam. It is clearly illustrated that the transverse displacements jump between the upper and lower segments at the location of the delamination can be successfully removed.
