Abstract: The expected large scale integration of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) is likely to add significant electric load onto power grids and thereby will create operation problems for power system operators. Thus, charging coordination schemes are an imperative for smooth integration of PEVs and the main objective in this thesis is to study the impact of utilizing charging schemes for PEV integration into distribution systems. Smart charging strategies are proposed in this thesis which incorporate an integrated grid-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-grid charging framework and meet PEV charging demands while providing real power support to the grid. Long-term planning methods based on cost-benefit analysis are then presented to evaluate the financial impacts corresponding to the implementation of charging strategies. In addition, the ability of PEVs to be utilized for reactive power compensation is presented. Lastly, the thesis also evaluates the amount of PEV penetration that charging strategies can integrate without any infrastructure reinforcement.
