Abstract: Human Operator has been the most important player in feature extraction proceduresdue to the variability and complexity of the scenarios under consideration. In thisthesis an attempt has been made to utilize the power of Artificial Intelligence by theapplication of a self-organizing map algorithm along with traditional image processingalgorithms to build a road inventory system. Satellite imagery from IKONOS was usedto detect and extract roadway features in t he central business district of Singapore.Edge detection from the high-resolution image has been coupled with the multispectralinformation for better classification results.
