Title: | BENZENE POISONING OF MIGRANT WORKERS IN CHINA: THE CHALLENGES AND THE FIGHT | Authors: | TAN EE LYN | Keywords: | China, migrant workers, benzene, chemicals, poisoning, health | Issue Date: | 31-Aug-2017 | Citation: | TAN EE LYN (2017-08-31). BENZENE POISONING OF MIGRANT WORKERS IN CHINA: THE CHALLENGES AND THE FIGHT. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | This ethnography traces eight workers and their families coping with serious benzene-related diseases. It tells how these workers came to be poisoned, how they were diagnosed, and how they coped with severe illness. After falling ill, they face a litany of problems, from employers denying any involvement in their illnesses and firing them to blocking their attempts to obtain recognition that their illnesses were work-related, shutting down their access to state-backed, insurance-paid treatment. Although China has laws to safeguard sick workers, these are not observed by employers and unenforced. Trapped in such an ecosystem, these workers have to exercise unusual agency, think up creative measures and engage the help of others to take on powerful employers who usually have the government on their side. Through their stories, it is hoped that other workers may find inspiration and courage to fight for survival and policy makers would pursue meaningful change. | URI: | http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/139401 |
