Abstract: Using shorter tool traversing paths in the machining of free-form surfaces can reduce not only machining time, but also tool wear and the risk of tool breakage. In this thesis, a new tool path generation algorithm to adaptively machine free-form surfaces with shorter tool path lengths is developed and implemented. Based on the concept of a??isophotea??, two different machining strategies, region-by-region and global-local machining, are adopted. The results from computer simulations and actual cutting tests prove that this method is more efficient than currently used ones. Tool interference detection is another important topic in tool path generation for CNC machining. To solve the global interference detection problems in 5-axis machining of free form surfaces, based on the hierarchical oriented bounding box (OBB) and the octree, a new global interference detection method is developed in this research. Theoretical analysis and detecting tests show that this method is effective and computationally efficient.
