Abstract: Short steel columns infilled with steel fibre reinforced high strength concrete were tested experimentally. The behaviour of steel casing and its response in a biaxial state of stress due to confinement of concrete was observed. The parameters studied included the concrete strength and volume fraction of steel fibres used in the infill. In total, eight stub columns were tested. In another set of experiments, a preload was applied to the circular steel tubes prior to concreting and the composite specimens later tested for axial resistance. The parameters reviewed were the slenderness of the column, concrete strength and the amount of preload. The preload was simulated in the laboratory by the use of prestress applied on the steel tubes through prestressing tendons. A simplified equation modified from EC3a??s approach was proposed to incorporate the effect of preload on the axial capacity of the composite columns. The interaction of preload with the strength of infill material and the slender steel sections has also been addressed.
