Medical simulation has been developed for centuries, it evolves along with technology innovation. In the last two decades, one of the most promising technologies for medical simulation is the introduction of three-dimensional (3D) printing. 3D printed simulation models offer medical trainees a better understanding of complex anatomical structures. In this study, author combine medical imaging, 3D printing, and design effort to develop functional 3D printed medical simulator and evaluate its effects through the randomized controlled studies in an educational setting. After that, the developed functional simulator is applied into different application studies to benefit relevant areas. This design research project has proved that the functional 3D printed simulator can benefit medical education, medical research, and relevant product development. The knowledge and experience gained through this project are significant for future development of medical simulation as well as industrial design.
