Abstract: In this thesis, I will show how Voyage in the Dark, Play It As It Lays, and The Vegetarian foreground an ethics of representing trauma. My thesis applies Michelle Balaev’s pluralistic model of literary trauma theory to an analysis of the texts’ representations of the voices and silences of the female protagonists, and the violence enacted on women and their societies. I argue that the use of form— narrative perspective, and paralepsis, analepsis, and prolepsis—emblematise an aesthetics of representing the unrepresentable. The texts therein acknowledge the limits inherent to representing traumatic experience, thereby foregrounding an ethics of representing trauma. I also analyse two themes: the female body, and collective trauma. I show how the texts represent physical, symbolic, and “curative” violence as it is enacted on the female body, as well as economic disenfranchisement, social anomie, and enforced conformity and complicity in violence as causes of collectively traumatic violence in societies. In doing so, I demonstrate how the texts adhere to an ethics of representing trauma in exposing the social and systemic causes of trauma, while also recognising the specificity of lived experiences of trauma.
