Abstract: Warehouses and factories are expanding skywards due to land scarcity and rising land prices. In some multi-storey warehouses, containerized cargoes are transported to the factoriesa?? doorsteps via a vehicular ramp, which occupies extensive land area and requires large capital cost. Other high-rise factories may use container cranes to transport the containers, but may suffer stoppage in operations when these cranes fail. In this thesis, an alternate container distribution system for high-rise factories by utilizing overhead cranes is examined. Various crane configurations and truck arrival rates were examined through a simulation model to provide performance statistics on the proposed system. In addition, the simulation results suggest that the three-crane configuration is the most effective, based on the operational specifications of a high-rise factory in Singapore.
