Abstract: Robust design is an experimental optimization technique to meet the challenge in the improvement of quality and reduction of cost by realizing the performance optimization. The objective of the research is to formulate the effective robust design approaches systematically for design and the optimization for miniaturization of electromechanical systems in hard disk drive, tailored for spindle motors. Two effective methods, Taguchi method and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) have optimized the HDD spindle motors design. The improvement of torque and Unbalanced-Magnetic-Pull performances of spindle motors using these approaches is highlighted. Several effective alternatives are also proposed in this research. The hybrid design, the Grey System method and the Monte Carlo method are investigated and applied in the robust optimization for HDD spindle motors design. The research results show that the performances of HDD spindle motors are improved significantly by using robust design technologies.
