Abstract: This work draws upon Hallidaya??s (1994) systemic-functional linguistics and Oa??Toolea??s (1994) seminal work on the language of displayed art. Analysis of the selected texts has shown that (1) natural language in the textbooks actively constructs and transmits knowledge to the students and displays particular features in terms of interpersonal, ideational and textual selections. (2) at the same time, various types of images such as schematic drawings, photographs, statistical graphs and biochemical models also construct and communicate specialist knowledge and enact social relations, together with the natural language. They are not merely decorative or even a??illustratea?? the linguistic text; they are meaning making resources on a par with natural language. And that (3) each type of visual display carries with it different sets of conventions of meaning-making, not only in the deployment and interpretation of combinations of ink or paint (dots, lines, curves, etc.) but also in their relations to the verbal text. This study also explores how such multimodal analyses may contribute to teaching academic English to non-native university students of science and engineering.
