Abstract: A novel series of blue light emitting fluorene-co-diazine alternating copolymers with low LUMO energy levels was synthesized by Suzuki polycondensation. The aim is to achieve better electron injection properties and hence to improve electroluminance (EL) efficiency when these copolymers are used as either the emission layer or the electron injection layer in PLEDs. In the polymer design, the fluorene molecule is chosen to provide the basis for blue color emission, while long alkyl chains are attached to the carbon 9 position to provide better solubility. The highly electron deficient diazine molecules, namely pyrazine, pyridazine and pyrimidine are employed to lower the LUMO energy levels. In our case, Pd(dppb)Cl2 catalyst was found to exhibit more activity than the popular Pd(PPh3)4 catalyst and the Suzuki polycondensation could proceed satisfactorily using dichloro substituted diazines. Characterization results from the six copolymers produced generally portrayed them to be within our design expectations.
