Abstract: Graphene, a fascinating material has high potential for applications in many fields. In this thesis, a chemical modifications to alter electronic properties of graphene are studied by immobilising organic molecules on its surface. Full structural characterisation and investigation of photophysical properties were done using a variety of techniques. A few graphene-metal oxide composite materials have been prepared and fully characterized. An electrode prepared from graphene/ Mn3O4 composite materials showed a maximum capacitance of 330 F/g at 0.5 mA. Similarly, investigation of lithium storage properties of VO2/W/G composites as cathode gave a maximum capacity of 357 mAh/g at charging/discharging rate of 0.1C with improved cycling stability. Overall, the thesis provides preliminary results from our investigations on structure-property relationship of functionalized graphene and its metal oxide composites.
