Abstract: In this study, the venoms of the four common venomous land snakes of South Vietnam, viz. green pit viper (Trimeresurus albolabris), Malayan pit viper (Calloselasma rhodostoma), monocellate cobra (Naja kaouthia), and king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) were investigated a?? with regard to lethality, biochemical properties, relative immunogenicity and immunological cross-reactivity. Protocol for preparation of species-specific antibodies was established. The resulting antibodies were used to develop immuno-test kits for the detection of these snake venoms (including species identification and venom quantitation). Three prototype test kits were developed: ELISA, optical immunoassay (OIA) and microarray immunoassay, of which OIA and microarray were applied for the first time in snake venom research. The usefulness of these test kits was evaluated with experimental envenomation by the four venoms and samples taken from snakebite patients in South Vietnam. The kits are applicable for analysis of snake venom and snakebite diagnosis in clinics as well as in the field.
