Abstract: Experimental and theoretical studies were carried out to investigate rapid solidification of Zn-Ag peritectic alloys and discontinuous precipitation (DP) initiated at both interphase and grain boundaries in homogenized Zn-Ag alloys. A systematic solidification phase/microstructure selection diagram was determined for Zn-Ag peritectic alloys grown at velocities ranging from 0.02 to 300 mm/s. Solidification of single-phase alloys implied that a plate-like cellular structure was the favorable morphology at growth conditions close to the stability of the solid/liquid interface. For solidification of two-phase peritectic alloys, a well defined two-phase eutectic-like h+e structure was observed beyond a critical growth velocity and the growth mechanisms were proposed accordingly. DP was observed to initiate at both interphase and grain boundaries in the two-phase Zn-Ag alloys homogenized at 680 K for 14 days. Morphological interface instability is regarded as a prerequisite for the DP initiation at an interphase boundary and the initiation mechanisms have been proposed accordingly.
