Abstract: A series of centrifuge model tests was conducted to investigate the behaviour of single pile subjected to compression and tension in clay. The pile loading sequence is varied to investigate the effects of loading direction and loading history. Two newly-developed model piles were fabricated to simulate Osterberg pile load test and to investigate suction behaviour under the base of a tension pile. The results show that side resistance capacity of a tension pile is lower than that of an equivalent compression pile due to different characteristics of side resistance along the pile. The side resistance capacity and load-displacement stiffness of the pile are found to increase due to soil set-up. The compression and tension capacities of a pile can decrease if the pile is repeatedly loaded in compression and tension. Significant suction pressure was observed under the base of tension pile. However, it vanishes rapidly after the pile is unloaded.
