Abstract: Singapore prior to World War II had a unique educational system. The Chinese and English schools in Singapore had little interaction with each other. This thesis examines the development of Singapore Chinese Community and its relationship with Singapore’s Chinese and English schools in three different periods: from 1900 to 1912, from 1913 to 1926, and from 1927 to 1941. Hwa Chong Institution and Raffles Institution are the case studies of this research.
