Abstract: In this study, an improved finite element model simulating a locked tire skidding straight on a wet smooth pavement is first developed from a previous NUS model. Tire-water-pavement interaction is analyzed using the finite element model to predict the skid resistance of a locked tire skidding straight on a wet smooth pavement. Using the same tire model in the finite element model simulating a locked tire skidding straight, the effect of slip angle on skid resistance is analyzed for different water depths and vehicle speeds. This model is extended to analyze skid resistance of a locked tire skidding with different slip angles on a wet grooved pavement. The effect of longitudinal and transverse pavement grooves on skid resistance is studied. Skid resistance performance of the tire with ribbed tread at different slip angles and vehicle speeds is also analyzed using the model.
