Abstract: This thesis is mainly devoted to the development of (i) necessary & sufficient conditions for forced oscillation in single-input single-output (SISO) loops (ii) extend the relay auto-tuning method, well used in SISO systems for PI controllers design, to multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. For relay auto-tuning method, the basic concept is to include a relay in the feedback loop and from the resulting limit cycles, obtain information which can be used to tune the controller parameters. As there are 3 kinds of oscillations when MIMO systems are under unit relay feedback control. How to apply the relay auto-tuning method in MIMO systems based on these 3 kinds of oscillation are presented first. After that, a great attention is paid to forced oscillation conditions in SISO systems because it is necessary for alter the most complex oscillation (Mode 3), which can not be used straightforwardly to design PI controllers, to Mode 1 oscillation, in this case all loops oscillate in a unique frequency and can be used to tune the PI controllers. A proposed method is given to preset the relay amplitudes of the MIMO system to ensure Mode 1 oscillation and then design the PI controllers.
