Abstract: Distributed Speech Recognition (DSR) is one method in which the problems of ASR can be mitigated. However, such an approach typically uses proprietary data formats for message passing, thus making it difficult for widespread adoption to occur. To solve this and enable a common messaging platform, we look at distributed computing technologies to examine how middleware could. After studying these technologies, we found that middleware technologies work badly with one another. By choosing any one of them, we will experience a technological lock-in Therefore, this is still not an optimal solution to making speech recognition ubiquitous. With the recent advances in computing technology and the emergence of a standard called Web Services, we see a possibility to exploit Web Services in our ASR system. Web Services make use of common protocols like HTTP and a plaintext format (XML) for data passing.
