Abstract: A series of two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element analyses are conducted to investigate the behavior of piles subject to lateral soil movements, with focus on the ultimate soil pressures on single piles subject to excavation-induced and embankment-induced lateral soil movements in undrained clay. Results from two-dimensional FE analysis show that the ultimate soil pressures on laterally loaded single piles are essentially the same as those on single piles subject to embankment-induced lateral soil movements. Results from two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element analyses show that the ultimate soil pressures on single piles subject to excavation-induced lateral soil movements are much lower than those on single piles subject to embankment-induced lateral soil movements; this is verified by analyzing the soil pressures from the measured bending moments of centrifuge tests on single piles behind a collapsed wall. By using the derived ultimate soil pressures, Chow and Yong (1996)a??s method is utilized to back analyze the result of a centrifuge test on single pile adjacent to excavation; good agreement with the measured pile bending moments is achieved. Three-dimensional FE modeling of centrifuge test on single pile adjacent to excavation shows favorable agreement with the measured pile deflections and bending moments by choosing appropriate parameters.
