Abstract: The strengthening of un-reinforced masonry walls against out-of-plane forces using externally bonded fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) systems was investigated. Both concentrated and patch load tests were carried out on walls strengthened using different FRP systems and anchorage methods. The test results indicated a significant increase in the out-of-plane wall strength over the un-strengthened wall. Four different modes of failure were observed in the strengthened walls, depending on the types and configurations of FRP and anchorage systems. For the observed failure modes, simple analytical models were proposed and they predicted the wall strength with good accuracy. The feasibility of using FRP reinforcement to strengthen masonry walls against blast was further verified by field explosion tests. An approximate analysis method was also proposed to predict the blast resistance. Last, numerical modelling of FRP-strengthened masonry walls was carried out and validated through tests, based on which recommendations and charts for blast resistant design were established.
