Abstract: The increasing use of porous asphalt surface drainage course and porous asphalt pavementnecessitates the development of rational methodologies for their structural and drainagedesigns. This research focuses on the drainage design of the porous asphalt surface drainagecourse and porous asphalt pavement. For the drainage design of porous asphalt surfacedrainage course, a procedure using 3-dimensional finite element analysis to determine its drainage capacity was established in this research. The effects of longitudinal and cross slopes were considered and a thickness design procedure was developed based on this analysis. For the drainage design of the porous asphalt pavement, a procedure using twodimensionalfinite element analysis to determine its drainage capacity was developed. Thisanalysis was applied for the thickness design of the porous asphalt pavement whichconsidered two different major design functions: (a) a short-term function for a single rainfallwith the aim to relieve peak runoff flow, and (b) a long-term function for multiple rainfalls torelieve peak runoff flow and to store the rainwater within the pavement structure over aspecified period of time.
