Abstract: Integrating the attribution literature on abusive supervision with the broader attribution and appraisal theories on emotion and cognitive theories on repetitive thought, I developed and tested an integrative consequence model of daily abusive supervisor behavior, which depicts the cognitive and emotional mechanisms through which daily abusive supervisor behavior interplays with different attribution tendencies to predict within-subordinate destructive and constructive consequences. Multilevel analyses of 692 paired daily responses from 74 leader–subordinate dyads show that daily abusive supervisor interacts with attributed injury initiation motives to predict a within-person increase in leader-directed deviant behavior that day via experienced anger and a within-person decrease in state work engagement in the next morning via ruminative thought at night. Additionally, daily abusive supervisor behavior interacts with attributed performance promotion motives to predict a within-person increase in task performance and organizational citizenship behavior that workday via experienced guilt and a within-person increase in learning behavior and state work engagement in the next morning via task reflexivity at night. My findings represent a promising endeavor toward a more balanced understanding of the short-term within-person destructive and instrumental effects of abusive supervisor behavior.
