Abstract: Visible light communication (VLC) is a green technology, which uses light emitting diodes (LEDs) to realize the functions of illumination, data communication and positioning. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate novel techniques to improve the performance of both LED based indoor communication and positioning systems. Firstly, we inverse design an optimal LED arrangement. The suboptimal LED arrangement design is also provided, which reduces the power consumption with acceptable performance degradation. Secondly, a visible light positioning (VLP) system based on frequency division multiple access is demonstrated. An error correcting algorithm is used to improve the positioning accuracy at the corners of the test-bed. Both 2-D and 3-D algorithms are investigated and experimental results with high accuracy are presented. Thirdly, a delay compensation code division multiple access technique is developed, which could be used in the VLP systems with no synchronization requirement on the transmitters.
