dc.description.abstract | The Northern Sea Route (NSR) can save up to 40% of sailing distance between Europe and Asia compared to the Suez Canal Route (SCR). As the Arctic ice cap is gradually shrinking, transit along the NSR is no longer infeasible and could become lucrative in the future. In this thesis, the impact of opening of the NSR on the Port of Singapore is analysed. Existing studies are reviewed to understand the viability. Transit data, port call data and AIS data along the NSR are gathered to exhibit the characteristics of shipping activities vividly. A profit estimation model and a cost estimation model are developed to enable shipping efficiency comparison between a NSR transit and a SCR transit. Discrete choice models are eventually utilized to capture shipping companies’ choices and preferences using data from a survey. Lastly, scenario analyses are conducted to predict shipping companies’ choices under different situations. | |
