Abstract: Flapping of a thin flexible streamlined body is one of the most commonly observed physical phenomena in our day-to-day life. Some of the common examples of such fluid-body interactions include fish swimming, bird flight, fluttering of flags and leaves due to a wind flow. The first two examples represent externally driven active flapping. On the other hand, the last two examples represent passive flapping i.e. the body does not actively control the flapping motion but instead responds to the interacting fluid and in turn modifies the flow via continuous deformation. We investigate the passive flapping phenomenon of a thin flexible foil interacting with a uniform open axial flow for three different configurations, namely conventional, parallel and inverted, through systematic 2D and 3D numerical analysis.
