Abstract: This research adopts a two-pronged approach towards heat sink fin structure design. The first prong focuses on the development of an improved CFD model. The trends in fluid flow and thermal characteristics of periodic heat sink fin arrays that can be utilized to reduce computational requirements in the design process were identified and used to formulate a simplified single fin CFD model. The second prong tackles the problem from the design approach. A multi-objective optimization study on the fin structure was performed by minimizing thermal resistance and pumping power. The insights into the fluid flow and thermal phenomenon, observed in the development of the single fin model and the optimization study, were reported in this study. This provides a better understanding in the fluid flow and thermal phenomenon in a fin array and in the choice of different design parameters for an effective design of the selected fin.
