dc.description.abstract | This study investigated the accumulation of soluble microbial products (SMP) and its effects on treatment process in a sequencing batch membrane bioreactor (SMBR). Synthetic wastewater comprised of acetic acid and sodium acetate as carbon source was used in the experiments, in which supernatant dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration was used to represent SMP concentration in the reactor. The organic loading rate (OLR) from 0.6 to 1.2 gDOC/L.d and the sludge retention time from 5 to 40 days were employed in this study. Satisfactory removal efficiencies of both organic and nitrogen was achieved (higher than 97%). The accumulation of SMP inside the bioreactor was observed. Besides, inhibitory effects of accumulated SMP on sludge metabolic activity, nitrification and membrane fouling were also investigated. A model for the prediction of SMP concentrations in SMBR and the effluent was developed. | |
