Abstract: High-efficiency copper indium gallium di-selenide [Cu(In,Ga)Se2 or CIGS] thin-film solar cells are an attractive technology for photovoltaic (PV) applications. Although molybdenum (Mo) is the most intensively studied rear contact for CIGS solar cells, there remain several challenges related to Mo contacts of CIGS solar cells. The main objectives of this thesis were (i) to improve the Mo back electrode quality via different designs - single-layer Mo films, bilayer Mo structures and modified Mo films with titanium nitride (TiN) or silicon nitride (SiN) barrier layer - and (ii) to improve the understanding of the influence of (a) various glass substrates containing different concentrations of Na and (b) the Mo rear contact on the performance of CIGS/CdS heterojunction thin-film solar cells. The effects of sodium incorporation into the absorber layer and the formation of a MoSe2 intermediate layer between the rear contact and the absorber layer were also investigated.
