Abstract: In the thesis, to understand the capability and limitation of a conceptual container handling system – the GRID system, a comprehensive discrete event simulation platform was created. The simulation results motivated two other directions for the efficiency improvement. The first optimization study proposed a data driven method to solve the container allocation problem. By doing statistical analysis on the optimal solutions of the math model, several significant factors were identified and an index function was formulated to determine the container allocation efficiently. The goal of the second study was to reduce the vehicle conflict. Instead of formulating as a routing or scheduling problem, the study treated the vehicle conflict problem as a path direction design problem. On top of it, the concept “heat-map” was applied as a heuristic algorithm to resolve large scale scenarios. Both studies solved the problems from new angles and could be easily implemented in the real world.
