Abstract: In ultra-high density Hard Disk Drives (HDDs), the head-positioning accuracy needs to be improved and strengthened in the presence of external vibrations and measurement noises. This dissertation presents original contributions to advanced sensor fusion and vibration control technologies in dual-stage HDDs. First, two novel circuit topologies of self-sensing actuation are proposed to remove the coupling effect between actuation and self-sensing. The self-sensing capability is also extended to the entire frequency. Second, the earliest switch-on conditions of dual-stage actuators are explored for faster and smoother track-settling process. Third, the self-sensing mechanism is incorporated and integrated into dual-stage HDD servo systems to improve the rejection capability of audio-induced vibrations. Fourth, a novel method for head-on-media detection is proposed based on self-sensing techniques. As the research is conducted in an industrial environment, the dissertation contains both practical results and in-depth theoretical analysis.
