Abstract: An approach to extract machining features for forging and casting parts is presented. It is capable of recognizing interacting machining features. There are seven phases in the recognition process: 1) selecting the machining environment; 2) Boolean Difference of the final part model and the raw part; 3) identification of machining faces (M-faces) ; 4) decomposition of the delta removal volumes into delta simple machining volumes based on M-faces; 5) gluing the delta simple machining volumes into alternative sets of feasible simple machining volumes; 6) optimizing the alternative sets of feasible simple machining volumes by the optimal partition verifier to obtain an optimal set; 7) mapping the optimal feasible simple machining volumes into the machining processes according to the selected machining environment. This strategy is process oriented and feature independent. It recognizes all features that can be produced by common machining operations in a uniform way and produces alternative sets of machining features.
