Supramolecular C60-containing polymers were prepared by mixing functionalized C60 and polymers with complementary functional groups. As shown by XPS and FT-IR study, the interactions between the functional groups of C60 derivatives and those of polymers are hydrogen bonding or ionic. Compared to pristine C60-filled polymers, the supramolecular C60-containing polymeric materials exhibit higher glass-transition temperatures, enhanced thermal stability, improved storage moduli, suppressed crystalline phase, and the fillers are more finely dispersed and attached more firmly onto the polymeric matrixes. As for the optical limiting property, functionalized C60 derivatives are poorer than C60. Although the additions of most polymers have no significant affect on or slightly weaken the optical limiting performance, poly(styrene-co-4-vinylpyridine) slightly improves the response of concentrated multihydroxylated C60 derivative.
