dc.description.abstract | In recent years magnetic metal oxide (Fe3O4, Gd2O3) nanoparticles have attracted considerable attention due to the ease and rapid progress in fabrication and processing. Magnetic properties of magnetic materials can be manipulated by varying the size, shape, composition and surface modification of magnetic metal oxide (Fe3O4, Gd2O3) nanoparticles to be used for cancer theranostic applications. We have synthesized 10 nm and 30 nm Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The 30 nm Fe3O4 nanoparticles show a high Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) value of almost 1700 W/g. Among the different shapes of 20 nm Fe3O4 nanoparticles, nanotretragons show a high SAR value of 1800 W/g. CoFe2O4 nanoparticles of size 15 nm exhibit a SAR value of 885 W/g. We tried to improve the biocompatibility of Fe3O4 nanoparticles by conjugating the particles with protein Bovine Serum Albumin. BSA conjugation enhances both the SAR value (2300 W/g) and cell viability (99.5%). Ultrasmall Gd2O3 nanoparticles of size 3 nm were synthesized for MRI applications. BSA conjugation over the Gd2O3 nanoparticles gives a r1 relaxivity value (2.8 mM-1s-1) and cell viability (99.6%). We have found that Gd2O3 nanoparticles coated with in-situ photodegraded, short chain polyvinyl pyrrolidone gives an improved r1 relaxivity of 12.3 mM-1s-1 and also 99% cell viability. In the final section of the thesis we have discussed the fabrication of Fe3O4, Gd2O3 nanoclusters to be used as a multifunctional platform for magnetic hyperthermia (SAR value of 920 W/g) and MRI diagnosis (r1 value of 5.8 mM-1s-1 and r2 value of 6.7 mM-1s-1) applications. | |
