ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | THE RETINA ALLOWS A DIRECT AND NON-INVASIVE VISUALIZATION OF RETINOPATHY CHANGES, WHICH, HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH HYPERTENSION AND TARGET ORGAN DAMAGE (TOD). RETINAL IMAGE ANALYSIS ALLOWS THE QUANTIFICATION OF EARLIER AND SUBTLER CHANGES WHICH OCCURS IN THE RETINAL MICROVASCULAR NETWORK. THESE SUBTLE RETINAL MICROVASCULAR CHANGES HAVE BEEN PROPOSED AS POTENTIAL MARKERS FOR HYPERTENSION AND TOD. IN THIS THESIS, WE AIMED TO INVESTIGATE THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN RETINAL MICROVASCULAR CHANGES AND HYPERTENSION-RELATED DISORDERS. WE DEMONSTRATED THAT 1) RETINAL IMAGE ANALYSIS IS A REPRODUCIBLE TOOL TO QUANTIFY RETINAL VASCULAR CHANGES; 2) RETINAL MICROVASCULATURE CHANGES ARE PREDICTIVE OF HYPERTENSION; 3) RETINAL MICROVASCULATURE CHANGES ARE PREDICTIVE OF HYPERTENSION AND TOD (RENAL DISEASE AND CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE).
