dc.description.abstract | Freshwater molluscs in Singapore are almost exclusively found in man-made and human-impacted habitats. My thesis examines the origins and potential impacts of introduced freshwater gastropods in Singapore. Firstly, I conducted a review of introduced freshwater molluscs in Southeast Asia, followed by a morphological and molecular study of the biodiversity of freshwater molluscs in the ornamental pet trade, a key introduction pathway for these animals. I then investigated the diversity and distribution of native and introduced apple snails (Ampullariidae) in Singapore, and specifically the current distribution and genetic diversity of a human commensal and cryptogenic species, Pila scutata, in the Malay Peninsula. I also investigated the potential impacts of South American Pomacea species on Southeast Asian Pila species through comparative dietary and feeding rates. Additionally, I clarified the previously-confused identity of two long-naturalised freshwater snails, and reported the presence of two recently-introduced species in Singapore. | |
