Clergy & Counsellors: Mental Health Care in Singapore. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | This study examines the relationship between the professional and traditional sector of mental health care in Singapore. While Christian clergymen have traditionally provided emotional and mental care to many populations, their jurisdictional authority has been challenged with the rise of the mental health profession. The broader aim of this thesis then examines the tension between the two sectors and how this is negotiated. Through the use of survey data, the cultural construction of mental health problems seen through different explanatory models, aspects of professional dynamics, notably professional role identity, professional competence, professional networks and professional ideology; demographic variables and religious conservatism are found to influence how clergymen relate to mental health professionals. More specifically these variables affect referral intentions and the choice of a referral partner when clergy want to find a trustworthy professional. Turf wars initiated by the professional sector are greatly moderated due to various institutional forces particularly the entrenchment of the church in the rise of the professional non-psychiatric mental health sector | URI: | http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/13433 |
