Abstract: In this thesis, the space-time code (STC) design for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading systems is studied. Code design criteria for multiuser composite fading systems, in which some users undergo quasi-static fading, others undergo rapid fading, are obtained first. With the fact that composite fading is a special case of correlated fading, more general cases, temporally, spatially and spatio-temporally correlated fading situations, are discussed consequently. The corresponding design criteria, which are independent of the channel correlation matrices, are derived individually for these three different fading systems. A set of common code design criteria is then given, which is suitable for arbitrarily correlated fading. Aiming at improving the performance as well as the data rate of MIMO systems, the new schemes, STBC-VBLAST and ordered STBC-VBLAST, combining space-time block codes (STBC) and vertical Bell Laboratories layered space-time architecture (VBLAST), are proposed. They achieved a good tradeoff between the performance and spectral efficiency with the low computational complexity.
